Tuakana Shakespear Trip a Sunny Success!

Nathan Hanwell —

It was a tremendous first visit for Tuakana to Shakespear Regional Park last Tuesday. With Team Building our main objective, and engaging with the environment a high priority, it was wonderful to see how the students supported each other, worked together and seemed to love every minute amongst the beautiful surroundings.

From water safety and survival, to 'meet a tree' and orienteering, the students were fully engaged and up for the challenge! Indeed, due to the souring temperatures, we did change our afternoon plan to a quick dip in the sea and sand sculpture competition - great stuff!

Mythical Creatures:

The Tuakana students are truly inspired by our change in classroom names, linked to Mythical Creatures. There has been a lot of research, discussion and voting, taking place across all of the year 5 and 6 classes. From Hydra's to Minotaurs, to the Phoenix and Dragons, there are some tremendous choices! All will be revealed to the students at the end of this Friday - exciting!

Events for Week 5:

Shakespear (Tuesday): Just a reminder that our second Shakespear Trip takes place on Tuesday, 28th. Same expectations as last week, but please ensure that your child comes with enough water - a few students ran out before the long walk back last time! Two full water bottles would be strongly recommended!

Parent helpers were vital last time, so if you're able to help out again this time, please contact your child's teacher.

Swim Sports:

Thursday, 2nd March - We will be heading out to Stanmore Bay for this fabulous celebration of all things water-based! In the coming days, your child will be asked which events they want to compete in (Mrs Taylor has already outlined this at our recent Tuakana Assemblies). Your child's class teacher will record which events they are taking part in. Those not taking part in the competitive events will enjoy the fun sessions laid on on the day. More information will be provided early next week. Please ensure you have paid the $15 required for your child to attend.

Drop-Off in Tuakana:

We are always looking to encourage greater independence and resilience from our Tuakana students. With this in mind, it is encouraged that parents drop off their child at the school gate, so that they can come to class independently. With that said, we are always keen to discuss anything you feel you would like to raise regarding your child's learning and wellbeing, but given how busy teachers are when preparing for the school day, you may be better advised to either email your child's class teacher (if minor) or arrange a more formal meeting through the school office if it is an issue requiring greater attention.

STEPS:

STEPS is the school-wide computer programme aimed at enhancing and creating better spellers, as well as students who are stronger writers and readers. The programme is further enhanced this year with the link to our new Code teaching programme, so even if your child has completed STEPS, there will be new spelling lists made available linked to these spelling sessions. Please ensure that you have paid the $12 for the STEPS license through the online school shop or via the school office.
