Kete Wana - Do the Duke!

Nathan Walsh —

The Duke of Edinburgh's passing last week was a sad occasion but a positive reminder about the fantastic influence his Award has at Hagley College.

The Award has only been available to Hagley students since 2019. However, during that time over 100 students have learnt new skills, become physically active, volunteered in the community and many have led their own 3-day outdoors expedition.

Recently, as part of the volunteer service aspect of the Award, students have been working with Te Pito o Te Puna Wai o Waipapa - our on-site Hagley Preschool. The Duke of Edinburgh students designed games and activities based on advice from Preschool Drector Jocelyn Wright. Duke of Edinburgh students learned valuable skills about how to speak to young people and how demonstrations are an important part of learning. Games were played on the front lawn at school and in the gym over the last few weeks. At the end of the topic, the Duke of Edinburgh students were well-rewarded with singing and jam pikelets!
