Hagley Multi-ethnic Homework Centre update

Jane Coppell (Homework Centre teacher) —

At the Homework Centre we have been helping children learn to read, write and do math.

We worked online during the lockdown, sending children their homework by email. I learnt to make video lessons for the children to watch and listen to. Some of the children completed their online work very well.

It has been very nice to be back at Hagley and see everybody and share stories. At the end of term 2 we had a shared meal to celebrate coming back. The children have been enjoying playing soccer and basketball together. Everybody has been playing fair and showing kindness. The healthy snacks have been provided to the children to give them energy. We celebrated some of the birthdays that happened during term 3 with chocolate cake.

We have many children attending the primary room who enjoy seeing their friends from all around Christchurch. They share ideas and help each other learn. It is good to see the children play card games and board games together, making sure everyone has a turn.

The children have been practicing their creative writing skills. They have written about living in a tree house, being rescued from falling down a hole and what happens at the end of a spooky path. These writing activities have helped the children to improve their grammar and spelling.

The Hagley Multi-Ethnic Homework Centre runs on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 4:30 -7:00pm. This is a free service for primary and secondary refugee background students. Please contact Ben (ben.gresham@staff.hagley.school.nz) for more details.
