Year 12 & 13 Wellbeing Programme

Emma Lumb —

These last two weeks have seen our year 12 students back in their Uru Hauora. The focus has been on looking at character strengths and how we can use them in different situations.

Students have been asked to go onto the All Right? website to take the VIA (Values in Action) quiz, which puts together a strengths profile. If you haven’t had a look before, it can be quite interesting and helpful to see which are your ‘signature strengths’ and think about how you use them.

We’ve been reflecting on how we can turn up and turn down the volume of our strengths, and habits of over-using and under-using different strengths. One thing to keep in mind is that a strengths profile from taking a quiz like this will change – it’s just a snapshot at one point in time. Also, that there’s no heirarchy of strengths that are better: this is about recognising, celebrating and making use of each person’s strengths.

From next week we will be back in Ngā Kākano, the activities that students have selected for one period a week in the spaces in their timetable. This block will run until week 4 of next term. The programme is compulsory for Year 12 and encouraged for Year 13. You can see the options that were offered for this block below. Student selections will be visible on the portal from Monday. We would love to see more of students leading kākano, either with others or on their own. Previously we have had students teaching and helping out with origami, basketball, board games, NZ Sign Language – it’s always a treat to learn new skills from each other. If you have ideas please be in touch, so we can can something in place for block 3.
