If at first you don't succeed...

Rowan Milburn —

This is the motto of Hagley ex-student Tyler Brailey, who attributes his acting success to having missed the first cut for a place at Unitec in Auckland to study acting, where he has recently completed a Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts and performed in a couple of professional scale productions as well.

Tyler studied with the Hagley Theatre Company in 2010 / 2011 before going on to employment to save money to audition for Unitec.

His time spent at Hagley was extremely positive. Tyler states he would never have been ready for Auckland if he hadn’t experienced the Hagley Theatre Company. The opportunities provided at Hagley are second to none and Tyler, under the guidance of Cameron Mattox and Darryl Low, learned life skills such as just getting on with the job and prioritising tasks as they need to be completed while keeping sight of the big picture.

“Cameron and Darryl both gave me a head start in my training that without I wouldn’t be half as confident in myself as I am now.”

Life hacks that Tyler would like to share with Hagley students relate to all interests and industries not just acting. He lists these as being:

Hack #1 – Don’t let the little battles get in the way of completing a task

Hack #2 – Adapt to the unexpected and make it work to your advantage

Hack #3 – Get excited about pressure situations; these are what you grow from

Tyler attributes his work ethic to his Hagley experience and is one of the many success stories to come out of Hagley College. Tyler chose a positive experience and sums it up when he states by way of a conclusion:

“With this mindset how could I possibly have a lame future?”

Enough said! We will follow Tyler’s future with interest and wish him all the best.
