Peer Support Camp 2020

Rowan Milburn —

Nineteen fantastic Year 13 students took the opportunity to attend a camp between the 21st and 23rd of January at Hanmer Springs. They were trained to be Peer Support Leaders during this time.

This involved the students being led through Peer Support activities themselves from ‘getting to know you’ to communication to values and culture and diversity. Students also had time to pre-plan sessions that they would deliver to Year 9 students during orientation.

Peer Support is a programme that is designed to assist Year 9 students develop in a new setting and make the transition from primary school or intermediate as easy as possible. The Year 13 Leaders plan sessions that are held once a week at tutor time for Term 1.

Activity Hanmer also led students and staff through a range of adventure-based learning activities, which was an excellent way to start the camp and build positive relationships whilst completing challenges.

A walk through the forest, a trip to the hot pools and a walk up Conical Hill were other wellbeing-related activities that students and staff enjoyed.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for both staff and students and we look forward to seeing how these students progress with Peer Support over the term. We also look forward to meeting with interested Year 12 students this year in preparation for next year’s camp.
