Senior College Wellbeing Modules – an update

Rowan Milburn —

It is fantastic to see students engaging with the wellbeing modules that are on offer to Year 12 and 13 students. A number of our staff are joining in where they can too, which is awesome!

The end of Term 2 has seen students who hadn’t completed the Wellbeing Toolkit given that opportunity. The toolkit covers things like personal values, character strengths, growth mindset, gratitude, and personal reflection time. We are hearing from some students that they feel like they have covered this content before and the reality is that they may have. However, what we are finding is that our students need to hear this content many times in many different ways. In my opinion, students don’t always know what they need in regards to their wellbeing and those that come to the Toolkit seem to find it useful and are engaged in the activities.

Measuring outcomes for wellbeing is also hard and I’m confident students a few years down the track will use the strategies that they have learnt and will think back to an activity they got the opportunity to try in the modules and then pick it up again as an adult. This fits nicely with our College wellbeing goal where we are endeavouring to enhance students’ sense of wellbeing so they flourish at Hagley and beyond.

As a parent you may have noticed absences in your child’s attendance because they are not attending a module. We are asking students to contribute an hour towards their wellbeing at Year 12, as it is a key element to a holistic Year 12 programme at Hagley. Some students in fact choose more than one module! Year 13s are most welcome to sign up to more than one module also.

We are offering some awesome opportunities next term (see here) - late selections can still be made for next term. The modules work on a five weekly basis and we always ask for student feedback and try and accommodate their requests. Currently, a popular request is for quiet study space. We don’t offer this as a module as such but we do have a quiet room schedule which is available for students that would like a teacher supervising the space.

Here are the rostered rooms. Any Year 12, 13 or adult students welcome:

We are always interested in hearing your feedback on what we are doing in the area of wellbeing at the College.
