Music for Life

Nanako Sato —

After concentrating on the academic side of music in Term 1, our performers are coming out to play this term.

We rehearse and practice hours and hours for 3 to 4 minutes performance. This practice routine and dedication for honing their craft is very similar to an elite athlete. We have been encouraging our students to utilise the growth mindset in order to become a slightly better practitioner of their instrument(s).

Welcie’s Band Success

A huge congratulations to a fantastic drummer, Year 13 student Welcie Castalone and his band 'The Music Strain' who entered for the Battle of the Bands at the Rolling Stones Rock Bar in Christchurch. They competed against ten bands on Friday 3rd May. Welcie also received the best drummer award. The band won a $1000 monetary gift. If you want to listen to their performances, follow their Facebook page The Music Strain.

Careers Expo

Music students in our school performed at an annual event ‘Careers Expo’ on both Thursday and Friday. They performed some groovy numbers to power ballads to entertain the entire Horncastle Arena. Our musos were great ambassadors for what Hagley is about: showing individuality, being artistic and showing intelligence. Moments like this make us proud to be working with them.

2019 SmokeFree RockQuest

We had three strong acts representing us this year at the annual SmokeFree RockQuest against 40 other contestants. The competition was held at the Aurora Centre all day. We were incredibly proud of our students, how they performed at the heats and how they supported each other.

School of Music student Elvis Nicolls performed his stunning and mesmerising original piece for solo/duo category. For the band category, we had a couple of bands: Year 11 Band - The Mondays (Luca Brown, Phoenix Carroll, Dylan Hawkes, Tarn Lee, Wyatt Templeton) and Year 12 &13 combined band - Indigo State (Year 13 Lucas Royds, Year 12 Kayne Child, Israel Soper, and Keira J from Burnside HS). Both bands performed exceptionally well, and Indigo State got through to the regional final which will be held at the Foundry on Friday 14th June. The tickets are available from Ticketec: https://premier.ticketek.co.nz/shows/show.aspx?sh=ROCKQUES19

Our Jazz band 'Hagley Big Band', as well as some of our finest individual solo items, plus other groups like the school choir, percussion group, and more will be performing at the evening.
