Hagley Redevelopment Update

Mike Fowler —

Ngāi Tahu has decided they would like to offer the school naming options that are directly linked and pay homage to the school name; Te Puna Wai o Waipapa and the significance of the whenua [the land] where Hagley sits.

With this in mind, they have given the name 'Waipapa' to the main quad area in front of the main block [see diagram above].

Other names include:

Wainuku
[our working title for this hub was formerly ‘te kete’. It’s planned to house practical design, art and other learning areas connected by a creative design process.]
Commentary from Ngāi Tahu:
Wainuku represents the body of water underground; the reservoir that wells up to the surface. Wainuku is likened to the core learning at Hagley and the space where the 'goods' are produced. Regardless of creativity, Wainuku is a puna whakaaro and a puna mahi - a think and work tank.

Auripo
[our working title for this hub was formerly ‘te puna’. It’s planned to house drama and dance as well as other connected learning areas.]
Commentary from Ngāi Tahu:
The swirls of water seen in a body of water represent the creativity of our students and their work; a flow on effect from one eddy to another.

Pūkaki
[our working title for this hub was formerly ‘te taura’. It’s a cultural space planned for reo Māori and tikanga as well as other connected learning areas.]
Commentary from Ngāi Tahu:
Pūkaki is another name for a source of water, but this particular name plays on the Pūkaki lake name which Aoraki feeds into. Aoraki in this sense is the height of excellence and the aspirations of the school, and to align with what is already existing in the school. Pūkaki greets you as you look out beyond at Aoraki.

Kōmanawa
[this is the sports and recreation hub between Gyms 1 and 2 – not shown in the diagram below.]
Commentary from Ngāi Tahu:
To spring up (of water); describing movement of water to the surface, can liken to the movements in exercise. Also there is a connection to manawa which can connect to how the heart is worked in physical activity. The imagery of water moving upwards hasn't been captured yet.

Planning Update

We’re still at the preliminary design stage. The master planners are working with our Hagley project lead group and some curriculum leaders (Practical Design, Art and Performing Arts) in this phase. Once the prelim design stage is completed and the use of the hubs is firmed up, the architectural team will develop detailed drawings showing the layouts.

In terms of a timeframe, building will start during 2019 – but it won’t be the start of the year. Our advice at this stage is that the total development will happen over the course of 3 to 5 years.
