Tribute to a Hagley Past Pupil and Westonian

Ramon Farmer —

Doreen Sue (neé Shue), born 28 April 1932, died 4 February 2016. Head Girl, Christchurch West High School 1950.

Doreen was born in China. In 1938 her family fled from the oncoming Japanese Army leaving all belongings behind, enduring a four-day march to Hong Kong. Eventually they were accepted as refugees to New Zealand by way of Australia.

The family first lived in the back of a fruit and vegetable shop in New Brighton and later had a fish and chip shop in Wainoni. Eventually Doreen's parents owned a much-patronised fruit shop in Cashel Street, near the Bridge of Remembrance.

Doreen began her schooling at St Michael's School because the staff included a nun who spoke Cantonese; in her last year at St Michael's Doreen was Dux. She went on to nearby West High School, taking the Commercial course and impressing everyone, both students and staff, with her quiet dignity and friendliness.

As Head Girl in 1950 she received the General Excellence Award acknowledging her outstanding ability in study and in personal relationships.

Doreen worked initially for the State Advances Corporation then after marriage with Nelson, the couple developed several business enterprises, finally owning a bookstore in Colombo Street. Doreen was both a respected and influential member of the New Zealand China Society and a keen mentor to her grandchildren, taking especial care to correct their English grammar at every opportunity!

Doreen was a valued member of the Westonians Past Pupils Association and took part in planting the 150th Anniversary trees in 2008; this flowering avenue stands in front of Hagley's main building, marking the founding of the College in 1858. We, along with her family, treasure her memory.
