Culture Chat on Plains FM 96.9

The Learning Communities Team —

Hagley Culture Chat on Plains FM 96.9 is a radio programme run by our ESOL students from adolescent classes.

Students together with their teachers design a 30 minute programme that showcases ethnic songs, ethnic recipes, stories of resettlement, interviews and presentation of different cultures and countries. Programmes are recorded at the station a week before playing on-air.

The programme is great for students. It gives them further opportunities in learning English and having a fun and new experience.

While students are at the radio station they discuss topics they have covered in class, such as favourite places in Christchurch and personal introductions. Initially they are reluctant to speak but always become animated and enjoy the experience when they arrive. Students come from a range of backgrounds and cultures, the variety of discussions are always fascinating.

Catch them on air at 5pm on the 1st Tuesday of every month!
