Student Council 2020

Rowan Milburn —

Opportunities for student leadership can be a key to enhancing positive wellbeing. It is also an area that is represented in our strategic goals as a College and is a focus for 2020.

Historically, we have run a "Young Leaders @ Hagley" club that interested students could join, which worked well for keen and interested students. During the elections for the student representative on the Board of Trustees, two out of three of the candidates indicated that a more traditional student council might be a good way of getting student ideas forward and making plans for positive change. This idea was implemented in 2020.

A representative from each Year 9-12 tutor class has been elected and we have formed a student council. The first task we completed was to re-design the bike parking to allow for more space between bikes and to advertise bike parking options to students.

Over the lockdown, the student council continued to meet online and small sub-groups have been formed so that students can work efficiently on an area of interest. The sub-groups we are working on include:

  • Cafe feedback

  • Communications between students and teachers

  • Environmental sustainability

  • School events and planning (next up: 40 Hour Famine and Pink Shirt Day)

  • Sustainable seating

We started back after lockdown by giving out lollipops with positive messages stamped on them, which was well received by students.

How can all students be involved?

Obviously with one representative per tutor class we have limited opportunities for student involvement. However, all students can put their ideas forward by speaking to their tutor class representative and/or putting a suggestion in our suggestion box in the Cafe.

We would love extra help with the running of school events. If your child would like to be involved we would love to hear from you. Our email address is studentcouncil@hagley.school.nz.
