Student Leadership

Georgie Jeffs —

At the beginning of August, three Year 10 students, Rachael Walshe, Georgie Jeffs and Holly Meek, attended the three day Limitless Leadership Conference for Canterbury’s Year 10 students.

This opportunity was possible through financial assistance from John Latham and the Royal Commonwealth Society who contribute funds annually towards developing leadership.

I asked Georgie to reflect on the experience and this is her response:

The Limitless Conference was amazing!

I am forever grateful that I was able to go to a place full of people that had the same drive and willingness to learn that I have. At the conference we were spoken to by many motivational people. They talked about themselves and taught us how we can excel in the future and become better leaders. Each day we had two workshops. Day one we worked on strengths, and how we can use our strengths to make a difference. Day two was about values, what drives us and makes us work harder. On the last day, day three, the two workshops had different topics allocated to them; the first one was goal setting and the second was about wellbeing. Goal setting was about wrapping up the conference, we had time to work out where we wanted to go from there and how we were going to get there. Wellbeing was about how to get rid of things that drained us and turn them into energisers. It was also about how to make sure we are living a happy, healthy life.

I took many things away from the conference and these are just a few of many things I have learnt:

I learnt I cannot control others, but I can control myself. I can do things to the best of my ability and not care what others think. I learnt to slow down and just eat the chocolate and savour the moment (they gave us chocolate too). I learnt coping strategies for when I am struggling, and I learnt how to be myself. Most importantly, I learnt that my voice is valued, my voice has depth, it has grit.

Thank you so much for this opportunity. I enjoyed it so much and I would love to do more things like this. Georgie.
