Young children’s health and nutrition:

Children need to eat many different foods to be healthy and to grow. Even though your child will have favorite foods, it’s a great idea to introduce them to new and different food options ‘little and often,’ especially while they are pre-schoolers. Remember that children need healthy food most of the time. It’s all right to eat foods that are high in fat, sugar or salt occasionally (no more than once a week), but not every day as too much of these foods can cause health problems such as obesity or tooth decay.

Most children don’t need to eat as much as adults – there is a simple way to gauge the amount of food your child needs in a meal. Imagine your child’s hand as a fist, their fist is the size of their stomach. That is how much food to serve for a meal – a lot smaller than an adult fist!

Two important rules for meal times are:

• Do make mealtimes fun

• Don’t force or push a child to eat
