Hagley Sports

Molly McLaren —

A number of our students and student coaches have had a great winter sports season - read about it here.

Year 9 Girls Netball

Coaches: Cherie, Charlotte & Georgi

This year Charlotte, Georgi, and myself (Cherie) had the pleasure of coaching the junior girls Netball team. We had a really great year; we all got to know each other and create a bond with everyone. The girls all played outstandingly well this year and we are proud that they got to the finals and played their hearts out! We didn’t get the outcome we wanted for finals, but the girls were all happy with how the season went and so were us coaches. This was my first year being at Hagley and also coaching and the girls made my time amazing. I created a great bond with many of the girls and am happy for it. I hope and know they will succeed in all their sports.

Intermediate Girls Basketball

Coaches: Shakira, Heather, Jasmine & Bree

This year Shakira, Heather, Bree and Jasmine were coaches for the intermediate girls Basketball team. We had a very successful season as we won every game! The girls were lucky enough to make it through to the final where we versed Akaroa and unfortunately lost, but it was a close game and we did end up placing 2nd overall.

Throughout the season all the girls improved and kept going. For "most improved" we chose Ariana and Summer because they lacked confidence at the start of the season but massively improved. At the start they both didn’t want to be named in the starting five, saying they were scared and they didn’t want to, but as the season went on, they got more confident and they eventually didn’t care! They improved hugely throughout the season and kept coming to training and games where they always tried their absolute hardest.

For "most valuable player" we chose Jasmine because she tried her hardest and was always at trainings and games. She always asked lots of questions, she was always keen to improve, and she always kept going. During the games you would always see her going her hardest and she was always positive. Her hustle on the ball was outstanding and she always got so many rebounds. Overall, the girls improved dramatically and tried their hardest the whole year. Both the girls and us are very proud to place 2nd and we look forward to seeing them next year.
