Remembering the Christchurch Earthquake - 22 February 2011

Mike Fowler —

As we know, recovery from the most traumatic event to strike Christchurch is a long process which affects us all - our friends, families and whānau. We plan to mark the anniversary of the 22 February earthquake in the following ways.

Staff and students may wish to attend the Christchurch Earthquake Memorial Service. Students under 16 who wish to attend should bring a note from home to Suzanne Waters, Director of Students. Students should let their Option 7 and 1 teachers know that they plan to attend and will need to leave class early in Option 7.

This service will take place on the north bank of Oi Manawa – the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial shown above – at 12.30pm on Friday 22nd February.

Those wishing to attend the service are invited to arrive at the memorial site – on the corner of Montreal Street and Cambridge Terrace – by 12.20pm.

At Hagley during lunchtime on Friday, staff and students who wish to mark the event are welcome to gather in the X Block courtyard [between X Block and Main Block] at 12.45.

At 12.51pm – the time the quake struck – we’ll observe a minute of silence to remember the 185 people who lost their lives and the many who were injured.

On 22 February , we’ll also fly the flag from our main building at half mast as a mark of our respect and remembrance.
