Music Department Success!

Nanako Sato —

The Hagley Music Department had yet another busy schedule in Terms 3 and 4.

After recovering from Southern Jam earlier in Term 3, our school choir Hagley Voice, Cabaret group, and 1st and 2nd Year Theatre Company students participated in the Voices Festival in week 4 of Term 3. Each of the choirs took out many prizes.

The Music Department also had a couple of major concerts in Term 3. At the Groups' Night at Ara Music Arts the following groups performed: School choir, Theatre Company choir, Chamber Orchestra, Blues Band, Vanz Jazz Band, Intermediate Jazz Band, The Troubled Signals, and Dr. Vesuvius and the Tambourine Enthusiasts. In week 9 of Term 3 we had another successful Hagley On Show at Hornby Presbyterian Church which featured stellar talents of our music students and their groups: Senior Jazz band - Dr. Vesuvius and the Tambourine Enthusiasts, Intermediate Jazz Band, Blues Band, The Blind Fishermen, Kanagawa, and Leo Suggate Band. Music students performed exceptionally well, and they were given excellence certificates at the event.

The Intermediate Jazz Band also performed at the Christchurch Big Band Festival during Labour Weekend. The band performed at two public events, one at the Container Mall on Friday and another one on Sunday at New Regent Street to perceptive and appreciative audiences. They had a workshop with Dr Rodger Fox on Friday afternoon which they enjoyed and learned in depth about performing as a jazz band.

Year 12 School of Music student, Lydia Fay sang beautifully with conviction at the Gala Concert on Sunday as a part of an auditioned elite group, the Christchurch Youth Jazz Orchestra.
