South Island Championship in Timaru

Clint Pilkington —

Following the Canterbury Secondary Athletics Champs held at Rawhiti Domain, we had a group of students selected for the South Island Championship in Timaru.

We got away first thing on Saturday 24thMarch in a school van with a crew of athletes and supporters; Nick, Noah, Keegan, Maria, Shakira, Jasmine and Stacy. Five other students made their own way south with parents and caregivers.

We arrived in Timaru with enough time to set up camp and be ready to support Dawn (Ata) whose event, the discus, started at 9.00am. The day soon ticked by and our last event was Noah’s 800m at 5.30pm. He was very well supported by those who had been there all day. On our way out of the Aoraki Stadium, we met Luca and his parents who had come down to get a feel for the venue and the track before his Sunday morning event. On our way home we ate the best fish and chips ever – on the south side of the town beside the Z fuel station – and were back in Christchurch around 9pm.

All Hagley athletes and their supporters were a credit to the school, cheered their friends on and encouraged the team to stay hydrated, warm and well fed so they could deliver first class performances. It was a pleasure to be involved.

Below are our athletes' results.
