Te Taura Here o Ōtautahi - Our Central City Community of Learning

Mike Fowler —

Over the last two years, Hagley has been part of a kāhui ako - a community of learning - formed from a diverse range of schools and early childhood education centres located in the centre of Christchurch.

The name, ‘Te Taura Here o Ōtautahi’, refers to our diverse educational kinship group spanning education from early childhood to Year 14, including adult education. Just as te taura [rope] has many strands, our kāhui ako has many strands. Each strand represents one of our diverse educational institutions which bind together to form one strong rope, or community of learning. The structure of the kāhui ako is unique, as students transition into our education environments from throughout the city and beyond and out into equally diverse education settings.

The kāhui ako established that it shares these achievement challenges in common:

• Wellbeing and positive education: happy, safe and responsible learners who are positive and have a strong sense of identity and belonging; a community with the skill set to flourish, connect well with others and achieve high levels of success.

• Future focused education: creating opportunities to engage in place-based learning particularly in the centre of the city, using emerging technologies and project-based pedagogy to ensure that our learners are engaged in a curriculum that is ‘future-ready’.

• Pathways: having cohesive transition procedures that ensure students and whānau move seamlessly into, within and beyond our learning environments.

These challenges will form the basis of the kāhui ako's work over the next two years.
