Nga kupu o te wiki [words of the week]: building Te Reo into everyday talk
One way we've been implementing our Te Reo Māori language plan is through language blackboards used in a range of learning areas at Hagley.
The idea is that the board is refreshed with language linked to current topics or units. The PE language board shown above is a good example, highlighting Te Reo PE teachers are using linked to the athletics unit students are engaged in. Words of the week are a great way to bring Te Reo alive in a subject-specific way, adding another dimension to Māori greetings and everyday phrases used in class. Other nga kupu o te wiki [words of the week] have highlighted promotions like Smoke Free Week.
Nga kupu o te wiki has been a success, working alongside several other ways we're enacting our language plan and our commitment to biculturalism. Thanks to Hagley PE teacher Aimee Mahuta for initiating the idea.
