Theatre Company Rich in Success!

Cameron Mattox —

Over the 28 years that the Hagley Theatre Company has been operating, the Company have produced a variety of national and international performers...

As well as having over 200 students move into professional actor and technical training, we have had a number of students who have gone on to work in a variety of performance fields. Just recently we have seen David Correos win the 2016 Billy T James award, which is the top New Zealand comedy honour. He follows the footsteps of two other alumni who are top international comedians. Jarred Christmas (who many would have seen on Channel 3 with his own show ) and Al Pitcher ( Europe Comic of the Year 2012 ) are based in Europe and are regulars on the stand-up scene throughout the world.

We have a number of past students who are working in the professional music scene. Two notable past students are Phobe Hurst, who is not only a professional actor, but an accomplished musician playing the ukulele; and Katie Scott who has just released another single with a group called Kittens of the Internet. Their first single, Living The Dream, has already had some acclaim. They firstly received a video grant from NZ on Air to produce their video, also gaining them a number of views. More recently, they have been nominated for the 2013 APRA Silver Scroll Award AND were also up for the Vanda and Young Songwriting Award, a massive achievement for any artist, especially being the debut single from the duo.

Another notable past student is Gareth Reeves. After leaving Hagley Theatre Company he trained as a professional actor at New Zealand's National Drama School in Wellington, Toi Whakaari, for three years, graduating in 1999. Gareth spent years working consistently in theatre throughout New Zealand and Australia with a strong foundation in Shakespeare and modern classics. His entry into television and film saw him win a Best Actor Award at The New Zealand Screen Awards for his role in The Insiders Guide to Love, and a nomination for his first lead film role in A Song of Good.

Gareth has since appeared in numerous television shows including Underbelly, The Cult and Go Girls. Film appearances include the Indie feature I'm Not Harry Jenson, festival sci-fi film Existence, and Tracker where he squared off against British actor Ray Winstone.

Matt Whelan is another notable New Zealand actor who has starred in several films e.g. Three Mile Limit, My Wedding, and a number of television series such as Go Girls, Top of the Lake, Of Kings and Prophets, and Coverland.

These are but a few of our past alumni who are making their mark on the entertainment scene in New Zealand. We are proud to have contributed to their successes.
