New Classes at HALC (Hagley Adult Literacy Centre)

Leoni Combrink —

2020 has been a year of changes for us! With our shift from Hagley Ave to Champion Street, the need to spread our classes across the city, and then of course the need to learn how to teach over a digital platform and back to the classroom again, it’s no wonder we are all tired! Over the past two terms we have started some new classes:

The ESOL Digital Literacy Classes were started to help learners become familiar in using computers. We had two classes here at Champion St and one at Hagley College during term 3 and two classes continuing throughout term 4.

A ‘Cultural Awareness’ class has been taught by Jo Rendall for volunteers from HALC and Delta Trust. These two sessions gave an overview of cultural norms in NZ and explored cultural bias.

In our Workplace programme we started working with two new businesses in Term 4 with a total of over 24 learners! Jo, Mary and Roz will be teaching at one of the workplaces and Sarah is at the other.

A new ESOL Everyday English class will be starting at Upper Riccarton. This means we will have Beginner, Elementary and Intermediate classes there, as well as our community Literacy Pathways class.
