What’s on in Term 3 for our learners?

Marie Stribling —

Term 3 is always a very busy time in the life of a school and Hagley is no exception.

This term students and parents will receive a second report from subject teachers on students’ learning, progress and achievement. The timing of this report has been carefully organised so that teachers can report on student achievement in practice exams (for those who have sat them), and to give students and parents feedback about how they’re tracking towards achievement of those long term goals that students may have set earlier in the year. The key aspect in this timing is that students are being given time to address any shortfalls in assessments or shortcomings in organisation before the end of year deadline (9 November) for completion of internal assessments.

Another way that we report to our parent community is through our ‘Meet the Teacher’ events. The second of these for this year is to be held on Tuesday 6 September 1pm – 7.30pm. We are trialing a new format this year by changing the time to day/evening rather than full evening, and by combining the reporting into one event to cover Years 9-13 students rather than having separate junior and senior events. Parents will be able to make bookings by going to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and putting in u4z9q as the event code.

Over recent weeks teachers have been having individual goal setting meetings with students. The idea here is that teachers and students work together to formulate a plan on how they are going to reach their goals by the end of the year. Students will be put in the driving seat to plan how they will complete outstanding internal assessments and to decide their priorities with respect to sitting external assessments.

We are holding our Open Night on Thursday 15 September 5.30-7.30pm. This is open to Hagley students as well as members of the public and is a chance to see displays and talk to teachers about what's on offer for 2017 and to help in decision-making.

This year we are also making some changes to the way we re-enrol our students for 2017. On Friday 16 September there will be no classes for students as we will be holding a Senior Subject Expo  for our current Year 12 students (and Year 13 students if they want to join us again in 2017!) This is the day for  our  students (and parents) to talk to us about course selections for 2017 and to re-enrol.  At the expo there will also be displays and people to talk with about  directions for 2017. Most Year 11 students will still re-enrol through their English classes prior to this, however.
