Dance = No Rest!

Naressa Gamble —

Whilst College students were gearing up for their exams last year, the Dance studios were a hive of activity as the Hagley Dance Company graduation season approached fast.

Featuring original choreographies by the students, alongside those of our tutors and professionals in the industry, the season, Orbit was a celebration to behold and a great follow-up to last year’s graduation – Veins.

The feedback was awesome! Check here for a full review.

Around the same time as Orbit rehearsals were on, students were auditioning for places with tertiary providers, and we are pleased to announce some excellent results! Madi Tumataroa, Kereana Mosen, and Dana Dawson were offered places with UNITEC for 2019 and we look forward to sharing their achievements.

Our annual Sheryl Robinson Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Dana Dawson, a second year student off to UNITEC – we wish her every success.

2019 had barely begun when a number of our graduate students appeared in OHO, the opening of the Bread and Circus – World Buskers Festival. Staged in Cathedral Square, the event kicked off the new festival format and we were proud to show off our graduates and prove that you can have a career in Dance!

We are already enjoying a closer relationship with our big brother Hagley Theatre Company – some shared spaces and classes are proving popular and you can look forward to some joint performance opportunities soon.

For now, put early April (Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th) into your diary as that is Hagley Dance Company 2019’s first public season – In Situ – onsite, original, outside performances at Hagley College. More details to come!
