Te Ao Māori at Te Puna Wai o Waipapa

Kaiako reo Māori Chris Smith —

Kia ora e ngā whānau, e ngā mātua, e ngā pākeke o Te Puna Wai o Waipapa. Te tari Māori would like to thank you all for your support in a successful start to the year at our first whānau hui.

Whānau gave us valuable feedback about their aspirations and concerns for Te Ao Māori at Te Puna Wai o Waipapa. In summary:

What do you think success looks like for Māori?

  • Mana
  • Pride
  • Achieving goals
  • Learning tikanga, whakapapa and reo Māori
  • Being in a comfortable financial situation in their adulthood
  • Confidence
  • A positive force for the community
  • Happiness

What do you think we can do as kaiako to help support and strengthen this success?

  • Bring whakapapa into the curriculum
  • Push for reo Māori to be compulsory through Year 13
  • Pronounce Māori names correctly
  • Teach how to set achievable goals and how to reach them
  • Financial literacy
  • Offer more experiences in the community such as noho marae, hīkoi etc
  • Integrate te reo Māori into all classes at Hagley

What would you like to see for our Māori students at this school?

  • Be more active in inter-school competitions
  • Bring back Māori art – whakairo (carving)
  • Increase level of fluency in reo Māori
  • Increase opportunities for all students
  • Financial support – scholarships, well-being support
  • Grow within our Māori culture with love and support
  • Foster strengths of individual students

What are some things you think the kura does well for our Māori students and whānau?

  • Manaakitanga
  • Including whānau in kura life
  • Making Te Reo classes enjoyable
  • Offering baseline support for those in times of need
  • Very supportive staff
  • Kapa haka has improved so much! Tonight's performance was beautiful!
  • Improving with multiple aspects of te ao Māori – Kapa, Ki-o-Rahi, reo Māori
  • Having whānau events where we can support our ākonga

What are some things you think the kura could improve on for our Māori students?

  • Giving more opportunities to a range of students
  • Help our students to understand the basics of living and learning
  • Improve advertisement
  • Pronouncing names correctly
  • More interaction, communication, engagement with whānau
  • More support for the whānau rooms. They look exactly the same as 2002
  • To reach out to more students to learn Te Reo and teach whānau as well
  • Explain the meanings behind awards with Māori kupu

The first strategic goal in our annual plan is our commitment to building a strong sense of identity and success for ākonga Māori: "Strengthen Hagley's bicultural partnership to ensure ākonga Māori succeed as Māori", including actions and success indicators. This feedback from whānau will be a valuable source for further developing our mahi towards this goal.
