Hagley College attended the Canterbury Secondary Schools Waka Ama Championships on Saturday 9th March at Lake Roto Kohatu.

It was an early start for the crews with a mihi and karakia from tangata whenua.

The cooler conditions appeared to agree with the record breaking team of 25, possibly the largest team there. The relaxed and happy atmosphere was complemented with qualifications into four finals. For the record:

• Year 9 & 10 Waka 6 Girls - 1st
• Year 9 & 10 Waka 12 Mixed - 1st
• Year 9 & 10 Waka 6 Mixed - 3rd
• Senior Waka 12 Girls - 3rd

We were extremely proud of our team for their commitment to the trainings, their availability at the weekend and their team spirit. Congratulations to all the students and thank you to staff, family and friends who came out to support us on the day.
