Lesley Cowie (ESOL teacher and careers and pathways mentor) —

Our classes have been so busy in Term 3. Staff and students are so excited to be in the classroom together. We have been learning in and out of the classroom this term. Here are just some of the learning opportunities we have had:

11ELL went to Canterbury Museum to learn about the moon and practice our everyday language on the way to and from the museum. Our museum teacher, Marika, was awesome to work with. We have been invited back for another session later in the term. This class has also been working hard on presenting speeches for NCEA credits as well as focusing on reading, writing and listening in English.

Our other classes have been focusing on careers and pathways. This has included exploring study and work options available after Hagley. We have written cover letters, researched jobs and visited ARA. In addition, Fentahun Yismaw (Year 13) recently took the opportunity to go to a forklift training course advertised by Hagley Careers. He went to the course, worked hard, listened to feedback from the instructor and came back with a Forklift licence! Congratulations, Fentahun.

Fathi Mohamed and Zigba Yismaw have taken the opportunity to represent Hagley in the badminton competition this term. They attend practices and go to a badminton match each week. Watching them improve throughout this year has been a major highlight!

Other ELL classes have been working hard on their NCEA research assignments and yet another class is working hard on UE writing and reading to gain those very important University Entrance Literacy credits.

Term 3 has been great and students have been focused and working hard to achieve their goals in academics and well-being. We have already had two great visits from community groups. The Police came to our classes to talk to us about their job and what happens in the NZ Police. Then, the Electoral Commission also visited to inform us of how to register and how to vote.

The term is already half over and our students are feeling positive and taking opportunities that are offered.
