Tertiary Pathways

Emma Lumb —

We will once again be offering our Catch Up College Intensive in January for students.

This gives students who missed UE or other tertiary course entry requirements the opportunity to catch up on credits in time for first semester study. Catch Up offers an individualised programme of quality, face-to-face learning to students from all over the country – our completion rate is above 90%. Because of the short timeline we are limited to enrolling students who need only 6-8 credits. As well as working with Canterbury, Lincoln, Otago and Victoria Universities, and Ara Institute of Canterbury, we are pleased to be partnering with Massey University for Catch Up College this year also.

We open for Catch Up enrolments once NCEA results are released, which is likely to be around January 15th. If students require more than the 6-8 credits, or they require standards that we aren’t able to offer in the January Intensive there are other options, including a longer-term Catch Up programme and the University of Canterbury’s Certificate in University Preparation (CUP).

CUP offers a non-NCEA pathway to university study, via one semester of full-time preparatory study to gain a Level 4 certificate. As UC@Hagley, we teach the TRNS001 Academic Writing and Study Skills course, which is the compulsory course in the certificate. For students who don’t require the full CUP for university entrance but perhaps want to get a taste of university study while working part-time or having a gap year, it could be worthwhile considering just the Academic Writing and Study Skills course. A further development in 2020 is the option for refugee-background students to take the TRNS001 Academic Writing and Study Skills course either before or alongside UC degree-level study.

For students going into Year 13 in 2020 who are intending to go on to university study, we have an academic communication skills course available within our Senior College. Tertiary Preparation (13TPP) is timetabled for Wednesday afternoons, and designed for students to take alongside their UE approved subjects. It will include transferable strategies for reading academic texts, APA citations and referencing, academic writing and research skills. See the prospectus for details.

Please contact transitionsteam@hagley.school.nz if you have any questions about our tertiary pathway options, or keep an eye on the College website for further details.
