Music Success

Nanako Sato —

Music department had another busy Term two. From attending workshops to competing at several music competitions, music students have been devoting their time to practice and rehearse their skills to the next levels.

Tiki Taane Mahuta

School of Music students attended Tiki Taane Mahuta show earlier in Term Two. Taane was accompanied by former Hagley College student Sam Trevethick from Shapeshifter, and Sam mentioned our school name and showed his appreciation to the school at the Q & A session. Students were inspired by their highly artistic live performance.

Rockquest

There were 60 bands who competed against each other at the Canterbury Regional Smokefree Rockquest this year. https://www.facebook.com/rockquest/ From Hagley College, 9 acts entered for this competition. All the bands worked very hard and supported each other on the day of the competition.

In the Solo/duo category, duo ‘X2’ (both Year 12 School of Music Students, Rongomai Callaghan and Nash’n Morgan) was awarded 2nd place in the Canterbury region of Rockquest and reached the top 10 in the National at the Rockquest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmdqnrzNWHk&feature=youtu.be

In the band category, three bands got through to the Regional Final of Rockquest this year. Three bands; Year 10 Kayne Child and his friends' band ‘Better Than Bacon’, high energy Year 13 students band ‘Blackreach’ with Sol Green, Tom Kumbaroff, Vincent Bolt and Andre van der Park, and finally very clever Math Metal band ‘the Blind Fishermen’ (both Year 12 School of Music students, Michael Bennett and Lawrence Miller). The Blind Fishermen received the Musicianship award from Mainz at the regional final.
