Welcome to Hagley’s new Diverse Communities newsletter. This is an update on some of the things that have happened this year related to the work we do with students from new and emerging communities as well as some things coming up.

Kia ora, my name is Namrud Gebreab. I was born in Ethiopia in 1983, and grew up there.

On Thursday 6th August 2020 11ELL students and teachers visited Canterbury Museum.

Settling in a new country has always had its good and not so good aspects.

At the Homework Centre we have been helping children learn to read, write and do math.

When I reflect on who I am, I really feel everything that has happened in my life has brought me to Hagley Adult Literacy Centre (HALC).

This year the Hagley Adult Literacy Centre (HALC) moved to the Hagley campus at 102 Champion Street, Edgeware.

11ELC is a new class at Hagley this year. It is mainly for students who have children at the pre-school or at Hagley College.

Our classes have been so busy in Term 3. Staff and students are so excited to be in the classroom together. We have been learning in and out of the classroom this term. Here are just some of the learning opportunities we have had:

Tēnā koutou katoa. This term we have welcomed six tamariki (children) and families from Eritrea into the preschool.

The launching of the Learning Communities Hub was held at Hagley College Cafeteria on Friday 24th July.

Every year, in the first week of Term 3 school holidays Hagley College run ‘NCEA Preparation Course’ for refugee background students throughout Christchurch.
