Fridge-friendly content creation

Tom Barnett —

Thanks to the increasingly ubiquitous and affordable range of internet capable devices our content has never been so instantly accessible in so many places.

In addition to the current crop of PCs, smartphones and tablets; in the coming years people will be accessing your content on everything from wearables, like smartwatches and glasses, to TVs, car dashes and even fridges. If it's got a screen, or can fit one, then it's likely going to be used for content consumption.

As content creators we're thrilled to reach more people in more places, but it can be daunting if our content creation tools aren't flexible enough to cope with the large number of platform capabilities and formatting requirements. Plus, we can be sure that the speed of change and innovation is only going to increase over time and produce gadgets and channels that we can only dream of.

The one constant is your content, it's not going anywhere, but it needs to be everywhere. Your audience will ultimately become more demanding of how, where and when they engage with it. People are increasingly tech savvy and if your content is written with one place in mind, like your website, they'll find what they're looking for elsewhere; somewhere where they get to decide the rules of engagement. Writing for a single platform is no longer good enough. Solely publishing to a blog on your website, which depending on when it was developed may only be usable on desktop computers, is now a thing of the past.

“Our content really does have to go everywhere. If you start trying to solve that problem now, you’ll be better off in the future.”
Karen McGrane

As content creators we have to learn to let go and accept that we no longer get to call the shots on how and where our content is consumed. We're better off concentrating on creating great, adaptive content and letting the tools take care of how it's presented to the end user on the device of their choice.
