Kapa Haka

Lisa Dovey —

Presentation of our beautiful Pākē.

On Friday the 8th March, we were fortunate to have Craig Pauling, Tainui’s Dad, come in to our school and present the Kaitātaki Tane - Ben D- and Kaitātaki Wahine - Makaia W - (Male and Female leaders of Kapa Haka) with a Pākē (cloak).

Craig started by doing a karakia (blessing). Then Miss Dovey invited Makaia and Tainui (as Ben was away that day) up to collect the Pākē that Craig’s aunty had made. It had the school colours weaved into the top of it. The male Pākē is smaller because the boys do bigger hand actions in the haka. After Craig put the Pākē over Makaia and Tainui’s shoulders, he did a hongi.

This year's first disco is going to be fundraising for the Kapa Haka uniforms and thanks to Craig the Pākē have started us on this journey.
