Virtual Library News

Zac McCallum —

Find out how you can get books from home and do some fun booky activities

Our Virtual Library

Even though we have to stay home at the moment our virtual library is still open. Click here to go to our library website.  I have updated the website with some useful links to eBook and eAudiobook resources that you can access from Christchurch City Libraries.  I'm sure many of you have run out of new books to read and Christchurch City Libraries have a fantastic selection of eBooks to choose from. They have heaps of really cool resources that you can access from home for free.

I have also added the link to our Library Blog on the website.  This is where I'll be posting lots of fun bookish activities, videos and competitions that you can check out.  I would love to hear about all of the cool things you have been doing during lockdown so please leave a comment on the blog. I will reply to these.

If there is anything I can do to help find books or stories during the school closures or you just want to say hi my email is zac.mccallum@halswell.school.nz.

Reading Challenges to enter for prizes

There are several reading challenges that your children can enter while they are at home with lots of time to read.

The Hell Pizza Reading Challenge has officially started and we will have a heap of Hell Pizza Wheels in the library when we are back at school again.  In the mean time, make sure your children are keeping a note of which books they read so that they can get their pizza wheels clicked later.  Children only need to read 7 books to be eligible for a free Kids pizza from Hell Pizza.  Write down the names and authors of the books they have read and I will gladly click pizza wheels galore when we're back.

Read NZ (formerly the NZ Book Council) have their own reading challenge happening at the moment too.  It's called the Stay Home Book Club.  Kids just need to sign up to the challenge here - https://reading-challenge.org.nz/.  They select a team and choose an option: book, podcast, eBook, audiobook or online storytime.  Each book they read counts towards their chosen team's score and there are book vouchers to win throughout the competition.
