Visit to Lincoln University

Louise Ponce —

On the 26th of June, some of the Year 7&8 students went to Lincoln University for the day for our Children’s University activities. We did 4 activities throughout the day and all of them were really fun!

The first activity we did was 3D food printing. We drew pictures and then used a 3D printer to print them out. But it wasn’t just plastic that we used to 3D print with. Instead we used mashed potatoes!! There was some really cool designs including hearts, ice cream cones, animals and race-cars and we all really enjoyed it.

The second activity we did was designing our own university. We were allowed to use our imagination and make it as weird and wacky as we liked! My university was called Fun University and it had 5 libraries, a candy room, a disco room and a pillow fight room just to name a few!

The third activity we did was Sheep 101 and dogs. It was really interesting learning about working dogs and their needs and strengths. We also played a game to learn about commands that dog handlers give to working dogs and how much it costs to buy a fully trained working dog in NZ.

The fourth activity was waste management. We each got handed a common item that you could find around the house. You then had to pick whether it would break down in landfill in 0-250 years, 250-1000 years or 1000000-infinite/never break down. We also learnt what plastics are recyclable (1,2 and 5) and how the recycling process works with plastic along with paper, metal and glass.

All in all it was such a fun day and I wish we could do it all over again. I can’t wait for next time and of course University for real!
