Writing Competition Success

Rob Naysmith —

Last term we had a group of students enter Haiku Poems in the New Zealand Poetry Society's competition. The competition received 318 poems in the junior haiku category and from that they awarded 5 Highly Commended and 12 Commended places as well as recognising the top 3 poems. The competition was judged by well known Canadian poet Marco Fraticelli. Congratulations to Julia M (Year 8) for receiving a Highly Commended for her poem, and to Reuben F (Year 6) and Lily N (Year 6) for each receiving a Commended for their poems. This is a fabulous achievement. The form of a haiku no longer needs to stick to the 5-7-5 syllable traditional format but cannot be more than 17 syllables in total.

Their poems are as follows:

Julia

From a forest of trees

a single leaf remains

Reuben:

pitter patter

calming sound on my roof

birds fly with soggy wing

Lily

autumn arrives

leaves falling

no choice
