Athletics Day Report

Natasha Fraser —

Here is a report on Athletics Day by one of our Year 8 students Kayla Weston.

Athletics Day

Nga Puna Wai

By Kayla Weston

On the 24th of this month, the Year 5 to 8s went to the new athletics ground, Nga Puna Wai which is beside Canterbury Agricultural Park. We were the first school to get the privilege of using this amazing new facility. The opening of the athletics area is part of the $53.65 million dollar sports hub. Being able to have access to the new grounds is an awesome advantage for the children as they can grow up using these grounds for athletics and learn how to use proper equipment.

A big thanks to Mrs Dellaca and Miss Fraser for organising the event and to all the teachers and staff who ran the different activities. Also, thank you to the parents who came along to support their children and anybody else who was involved in the event. Everyone who attended was amazed by the quality of the tracks and the entire facility.

It was a perfect day for the event - sunny and hot. The long distance runners were the first to use the new tracks. They all showed awesome growth mindset and persistence. When the rest of the kids arrived the real fun began, starting off with the welcome to the new facility and then an overrun of how the day was going to work, then the first rotation. The events offered for the children to participate in were: shot put and discus, long jump and high jump, sprints and long distance. Children spent the day in their year groups and split between girls and boys. The tracks were brand new and made with a world class material easy to run and sprint on. The discus net stood high off the ground at the back corners. The long jump pits had the same track material for the run-up and a new pit at the end

The day ran very smoothly with three events before lunch and two after. Well done to all of the students who placed in their events and for everyone who tried their best - well done for putting in the effort. Once again a big thank you to all of the participants and helpers.
