Stuart Cameron —

Tēnā koutou katoa. Tēnei te mihi atu ki a koutou

Today we entered a new phase of schooling under Alert Level 3. To some, it may appear that the shift from Alert Level 4 has been reasonably minor. This is illustrated in the often-used analogy Alert Level 3 is basically "Alert Level 4 with takeaways". In reality, a considerable amount of thought and planning has gone into reopening the school for the children who are not in a position to continue learning at home.

The biggest challenge for us has centred around balancing our Distance Learning Programme with having some students physically back at school. This has been a major logistical exercise that has included organising all 60 staff members into an onsite and offsite crew, establishing bubble groupings, rearranging teaching spaces and playground areas inline with physical distancing requirements and the development of a raft of new health and safety procedures. This is something that is happening in workplaces across the country as we adjust to this new way of working and living and I am sure that many families will appreciate the extra efforts, adjustments and compromises that are being made.

On that note, I would once again like to acknowledge how well our staff have responded to these challenges. I can assure you that they continue to be fully committed to doing the very best possible job they can for our whānau.

Over the next couple of weeks, it is important to stay connected with your child(ren)‘s T group teacher. They will continue to be your first port of call if you have any questions or concerns about your child(ren)'s learning or wellbeing. Under Alert Level 3, our school office is also now open from 8.30 am-3.15 pm each day. If you need to contact the school directly please phone our Office Manager Heather Burnby on 32270-38 or email admin@halswell.school.nz

Finally, I want to thank all of the parents who have taken the time to email in with messages of support. These have been very much appreciated by our staff. We would also like to acknowledge the many challenges our families have faced throughout the lockdown period, and as we enter this new phase, would like to share this video message to let you know that we are thinking of you.

He waka eke noa!
