Samoa Update

Lisa Dovey —

Find out about our Halswell School trip to Samoa!

Talofa!

In September this year, 19 Year 8 girls are going to be lucky enough to be travelling to Samoa. The girls are funding the trip through a combination of cleaning the school, fundraising and parent contribution.

In preparation, Anita Head and Lisa Dovey have recently completed a whirlwind tour of Samoa (Upolu and Savai’i) to assess the safety and appropriateness of various facilities and accommodations options.

Whilst the girls are in Samoa they will be visiting a variety of attractions; however, the main purpose of visiting Samoa is undertake social action by assisting in the Samoan community.  We have set up contacts with Village Schools (including one in the Tsunami hit area of Lolamanu) and the Samoan Victims Support Group, which runs a home for vulnerable children, and our girls will be volunteering their time (and donating gifts) to these worthy organisations.

This fits in perfectly with our overarching school theme of ‘Community’, which has our children looking at ways they can show ACTIVE characteristics by giving back to different groups of people around the world.   It also provides a very real opportunity to show our school value of care, and demonstrates first hand the need for resilience in different situations.

In the coming months there will be a number of opportunities for you to show your support to the travellers, through a variety of fundraisers. We would be very grateful if you could support their efforts.

Fa’afetai,

Lisa and Anita
