Book Chat Face Snap Competition

This is a cool new competition that you can enter with your family over the July school holidays. The idea of the competition is to get parents and their children sharing a good book together. Here is how it will work:

1. Both the student and their parent (or caregiver) read Chapter 1 of the same book (chosen by the child). For Year 0-4 this can be a picture book that you share together.

2. Parent and child chat about the book, e.g. What do you think so far? What do you think might happen next? What was your favourite part?

3. Get a photo taken of the 2 of you (with the book cover visible). This photo may be used in our school newsletter.

4. Email the photo of your 'Book Chat' to zac.mccallum@halswell.school.nz by Wednesday 24 July.

One winner will be chosen by a guest judge and the winning parent and child will win a double movie pass and a book voucher to enjoy some quality time together.

I'm looking forward to seeing your photos of you enjoying a great book together.

Extra books for the holidays

If your children would like extra books to read over the holidays please let me know.  As long as children don't have overdue books I let them take an extra book or two but if they would like more than that you can either email me to let me know or they can just ask me in the library at 2nd lunch.  They might even like to grab one of the Halswell Book Bingo sheets to work on throughout the holidays.  Each level that they complete gives them a certificate and a badge.

Library events in Term 3

There are two family events coming up in Term 3 to keep an eye out for.  There will be a Teddy Bear Sleepover early in Term 3, with the chance for children to come along to the library at night with a teddy and their family to enjoy some bedtime stories.  Children can then leave their teddy with Mr McCallum for the night and they will get up to all sorts of mischief in library.  This event will be ideal for younger children as it will be earlier in the evening.

The second event of Term 3 will be our Family Children's Book Quiz.  This was an event that we ran last year, with family teams of 4 competing to answer questions about children's books, characters and authors.  This will be later in Term 3 but get thinking about who you want in your team and what your team name could be.
