Huritini Junior Council

Rob Naysmith —

The Huritini Junior Council is a student led council made up of children from schools in the Halswell area. It is overseen by Anne Galloway our local councillor and has been set up to get the views and opinions of children in the area. The group also decide and work on a project together to improve the local area. This year the Junior Council decided that work should be done at Westlake Park to improve the signage around the reserve, including replacing existing signs and adding informational signage about the birdlife, similar to the Halswell Quarry signs. The group also thought the addition of a mural on the side of the toilet block wall done by them with the help of an artist would also lift the area. A few weeks ago the Junior Council went to a Community Board Meeting and presented their case. The 5 schools involved prepared a 5 minute presentation. They all did a tremendous job and impressed the Board members. The Community Board has agreed to assign $3000 to complete the project which is a great result for this group and shows that children do have a voice in our community. The work will continue as they work with the Community Board and Council to get the project completed. Well done to our two Year 7 representatives Hunter and Lola who have shown great leadership and organisational skills (among many others) to get this project over the line.
