PB4L Update

CATHIE ZELAS —

During terms 1 and 2, the major teaching focus across the school for PB4L has been unpacking our new school values and teaching the expected behaviours for the "all settings" column of our Halswell School Behaviour Matrix.

As a staff, we have been working on developing our behaviour expectations for the other important settings in our school and will begin teaching these this term. The "digital spaces" setting has been left blank at present as we are currently reviewing and updating our cyber safety agreements for students and will align our digital spaces behaviour expectations with these once they are completed.

The teaching focus in all learning centres for weeks 1 and 2 will be following agreed game rules in the playground. By following the rules of games and playing fairly students are demonstrating Kotahitanga.

At home you can support your child to develop an understanding of the importance of rules by:

  • reading these parenting tips about Fair Play for Children.
  • discussing why rules are important in other contexts, e.g., at home, on the road, sports your children play. What would these contexts look like if there were no rules?
  • watch the Commonwealth Games and discuss with your child how the competitors are keeping to the rules and playing fairly. Why is this important?
  • talk about rules you have in your family. Why do you have them? Get your child's input into making your family rules.
  • when your child is playing with siblings or friends help them to co-construct and keep to fair rules for their games.
  • watch "The Day without Rules" with your child and discuss
