Year 7/8 Volleyball and Basketball Tournaments

Sports Reporters —

On Tuesday the 29th of May the Canterbury basketball tournament was held as well as a volleyball tournament. We had a team of boys go to the basketball and a ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ team go for volleyball. Here is a piece of writing from Louie and Ameya who went to the basketball tournament.

Basketball

First our team had to qualify through a Zones Competition in Templeton and ended up winning it! Our first game was against Fernside School. Louie scored the first points of the game with an easy layup. We ended up winning 14-7. We had a bit of a break to relax and recover. Our second game was against Christ the King we were winning by a bit, we were all feeling good. Now we were playing one of the hardest teams (or so we thought) Queenspark. They had a really fast, good player which we had to double team. Our game plan was to pressure the team after they inbound the ball which worked amazingly well. The game ended 21-5. We had won. We played Hillview and also beat them, now it was to the semis. We played Ohoka, we won that game as well. Now to the finals, we were all hyped up. We were versing the team that had won all their games apart from one. We were versing Queenspark. The game started off quite well. The last few minutes of the game were quite intense as they had gained a few baskets while we were struggling, it was 18-14 and 13 seconds left in the Canterbury Championships, Queenspark had the ball and made a three pointer… The score was 18-17, Madden inbounded the ball to Louie, Louie passed it to Hugo, 3 seconds left, Hugo shot a deep three pointer but unfortunately it didn’t count. The Halswell team still won the Canterbury Championships 2018!!!

Volleyball

At the volleyball tournament the C team lost all their games and the B team won 3 of their games. The A team won 3 out of 8 of their games and came 7th in their division. Even though they didn’t win they still had an awesome day out at the volleyball tournament. Here is a piece of writing from Gabby who was in the volleyball A team.

“As the ball came towards me, the adrenaline was intense, all the children’s mouths moving but no noise, BANG I hit the ball turning it into a spike. It was like the noise had a play and pause button and it just hit play. We played multiple games including our first against Rolly, which unfortunately we lost. We played 8 games and only won 3 out of 8 of them but we had a very fun day.
