Halswell Sports News

Natasha Fraser —

It has been a busy couple of weeks with sport at Halswell. We have had lots of students competing and playing sport in both tournaments and weekly sport. Our hockey and football teams are off to the Zone Winter Tournament tomorrow and we are trialing for various sport competitions which take place early next term.

A huge congratulations to Hunter H, Lorraine O and Cameron G who competed at the Canterbury Cross Country last week. It an incredible achievement to come top 6 in both your School Cross Country and Zone Cross Country. It was a chilly morning down at the Quarry but they all ran extremely well. Hunter placed 31st out of 119 Year 5 boys. Cameron placed 69th out of 181 Year 8 boys. Lorraine placed 117 out of 188 Year 7 girls. They are great achievements and they should all be extremely proud of themselves. A massive thank you to Jenelle and Sharon who went and supported our Halswell runners on the day.

Over the past two weeks we have had three Halswell students compete in the Canterbury Gymnastics competitions. Holly C competed in the Artistic Gymnastics at QEII. Holly competed in bar, vault, beam and a floor routine placing 7th in her grade. Isabella C and Lucy B competed yesterday in the Rhythmic Gymnastics at Olympia. Both girls did an awesome job at displaying our Halswell School ACTIVE and values while competing. Isabella placed 2nd in her hoop routine and competed in the rope routine, placing 5th overall.  Lucy competed in the Level 2 ball routine, placing 5th overall as well. Congratulations to all three girls that competed, what fantastic results!

Zone Rippa Rugby Tournament

Last week 17 Year 5 and 6 students braved the icy cold conditions down at Lincoln Domain and competed in the Zone Rippa Rugby tournament in bare feet! Our A team placed second, missing a crucial win to Prebbleton to take them to the Canterbury competition.  Our B team placed first in their grade and had some good wins against Prebbleton and Lincoln Primary. It was great to see the team work and sportsmanship that our Halswell students displayed out on the field. A couple of quick break through tries and a lot of great running provided a fantastic afternoon out.  A huge thank you to John who coached our A team and took them for practises in the weeks leading up to the competition.
