Halswell School Cross Country 2023

Michael Ruffell —

It was great to see our Years 5-8 students involved in the school cross country. Congratulations to all students involved in both the competitive and fun run events. Attached are our school results. Highlighted in green are those who have qualified for the Lincoln Zone Cross Country on the 1st of June. Below is a recount from Isla C who won the Year 7 girls race.

As my friends and I walked down to the Quarry we chatted about how nervous but excited we were about cross country. We got down to the Quarry and we laid our jackets down on wet grass and waited for our turn. After about 10 minutes the year 5’s started to wander down to the starting line and all of a sudden, “bang” the clappers sounded. As they started to run I felt really nervous and so did my friends. Next it was the year 6’s. One of my friends was a year 6 so I went to cheer them on. They all did so well. Just like that it was my turn, they called the year 7s up to the starting line and we did some stretches and then we were off. I started off with a slight jog then I sped up a wee bit. When I was running the sun came out, I was so excited to start running but it was a three kilometre run and I have never run three kilometres before. One kilometre in I started to get the stitch but I kept on running. At that point I was the 2nd girl and the 5th person overall. I knew if I wanted to win for the girls I had to keep going. Later on in the run I started to have a sore chest but again I kept on running. I was in the 2nd kilometre when I passed the girl who was in first place and the boy who was in 3rd place. The last kilometre flew by. I was running down the finish line and I started to sprint and I came 1st for girls and 3rd overall. All my hard work training at school paid off. Everyone did so well on Friday and it was great to see everyone involved whether it was in the competitive races or the fun run. Ka pai Halswell School. By Isla C
