Tuna (Eel) Mufti Day

Lisa Dovey —

Feedback from our Senior Urban Eel Group.

Kia ora everyone. We would like to thank everybody who donated to our Tuna (Urban Eel) Mufti Day. We raised $780.90 to plant some natives around our local stream, Nottingham Stream. The purpose of this is to create a healthier environment for the local tuna/eels that live in the stream. The plants will also help to provide a home for the insects that the tuna eat and shade the stream to decrease algae growth in summer.

Nottingham Stream is a site of ecological significance because it supports at-risk species and contributes to an important ecological network/linkage and migration route for migratory fish species, like our longfin tuna.

You can see Nottingham Stream at Muir Park, it flows into the Halswell River (Huritini) and out to Te Waihora/ Lake Ellesmere.

As a group we are now working on approaching the Council to try and improve the physical environment of the Stream and want to take the ECan and CCC Stormwater Superhero trailer to public places to explain stormwater and its impact on our local streams. You may see the trailer in school this Friday as we learn how to use it. We have also assisted the Junior Urban Eel Group to develop a flier to share stormwater information with our community.

Thanks!

Nga mihi nui,

Senior Urban Eel Group (Isabella, Maddy, Trelise, Theo, Hunter, Terence, XinYue, Felix, George, Flynn)
