EPro8 Success

Rob Naysmith —

This competition is about problem solving and has children completing construction tasks based on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). The task this year was for teams to construct a model (using the Epro8 Kit) of a famous landmark and then engineer a launch contraption using a pully, cogs and crank-handle system to fire party poppers off the top of it, replicating a New Years Eve fireworks display. The catch was they had to be 2 metres from their structure when they triggered the party poppers. Teams had to build their structure within given guidelines, create a 1 minute movie documenting the process, write a one page report including the comparative mathematical proportions of their structure, and submit it all through an online portal. We entered two teams of 4 children in the Years 5-6 heats and three teams in the Years 7-8 heats. The structures created were: The Leaning Tower of Pisa, The London Eye, Big Ben, Golden Gate Bridge, and the Sydney Opera House. All teams followed the criteria very well and created some great structures securing all 5 teams a place in their respective semi-finals. Two of the years 7-8 teams came 3rd equal in their heat and one of our 5-6 teams also came 3rd in their heat. Teams now compete in a 3 hour challenge against 11 other teams in a semi-final. This is held at a school and electronics are added to the kit they use. Congratulations to all our teams and good luck for the semi-finals in Week 10.
