Family Event - Picture Book Magic with Juliette MacIver

Next Wednesday (29 July) from 6:45-7:30pm, we have Picture Book Magic with Juliette MacIver. Juliette is the creator of Marmaduke Duck and the Marmalade Jam, Queen Alice’s Palaces and That’s Not a Hippopotamus! It’s going to be a fun night with Juliette sharing some of her stories with us and showing us how she writes a picture book.

This is the same night as the Learning Conferences so you could always have a later conference time with your child's teacher and come along to this event afterwards.

Please RSVP to zac.mccallum@halswell.school.nz

Hell Pizza Reading  Challenge - Read 7 books to get a free pizza

Lots of your children have been reading up a storm during the holidays, but don't forget that they can be rewarded for their reading.  The Hell Pizza Reading Challenge runs until the beginning of December and children can claim as many free pizzas as they like before then.

For every book they read they just need to get a segment of the pizza wheel signed.  When they have read 7 books and have 7 signatures I will click their pizza wheel and then they can take it to any Hell Pizza shop to collect their free pizza.

Children can collect a pizza wheel from the library.

2020 New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults

This term in the library we'll be celebrating the finalists in the 2020 NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. The judges have chosen the best books in NZ for children and teens from the last year.  There are different categories, from picture books and junior fiction to nonfiction and the best first book award.  There are some really fantastic books on the shortlist this year and we have most of them in our library.

We have a display celebrating the book awards in the library and you can borrow any of the books on the display.  There are also some booklets with information about each of the books and some bookmarks that you can take.

If you want to read more about the finalist books check out the book awards website.
