Sport News - Zone Cross Country and Basketball tournament

Natasha Fraser —

It has been a busy week with both the Lincoln Zone Cross Country and Basketball tournament. We had a total of 70 Halswell kids compete in these tournaments and some fantastic results which allow some students to progress on to Canterbury level in both of these sports.

Another fantastic day which saw 45 children competing for a spot in the top 6 of their year level for a place at the Canterbury Cross Country. Our Halswell students represented us with pride and were fierce competitors while running around the track. Congratulations to the following children who have qualified for the Lincoln Zone team, which will be running at the Canterbury Cross Country on Wednesday 19th of June.

On Thursday 23rd May the Year 5/6 girls and boys and Year 7/8 boys Halswell basketball teams went to the zones basketball tournament at Knights Stream School.

Year 7 and 8 Boys

We had a great game against Knight Stream. It was really close and we drew with them. We then lost to Prebbleton and won our last two games. The Year 7/8 boys team came second. Sadly we didn’t make Canterbury’s but we all had great fun.

Thank you to Mr Robb for coaching us and to all the parents that helped to transport us all to the tournament . Also a big thank you to Mrs Dellaca for organising us all. Georg W

Year 5 and 6 Boys

We played Prebbleton and won the first game 14-0.

One hour later we played Knight Stream and won again 8-0. We got into Canterbury's for this tournament.

Thanks to Mrs Dellaca for coaching our team - we really appreciate it. Thanks also to the parents who drove us there and took time off work to help us. Thanks to the other teams as well for participating in this. Flynn and George

Year 5 and 6 Girls

We all met in the blue room on the 23rd of May with our bags and accessories that we needed. If we didn’t have a mouth guard we couldn't play; it was compulsory to play with a mouth guard.

The parents and teachers provided transport. The majority of us went with parents as Mrs Dellaca was the only teacher going. It was at Knight Stream School. When we arrived we had time to practise so we went into the gym and we were assigned a room to keep all of our bags and drinks because there was only one court and not much space around the outside.

Our first game was at 9:30 and we played Knight Stream Girls Year 5 and 6 - the games were only 10 minutes. This was our only chance. If we lost this we wouldn't go to the Canterbury Tournament(because our next game was friendly) but if we won we would go to to Canterbury’s. It was a very close game. We all did very well and in the end we won 10-4.

Our next game was at 11:30 and was a friendly game against Prebbleton Year 7 and 8 because they were the only Year 7 and 8 girls team. The score was 22-4 to them and then in the second half at the end of the game it was 28-8 to them. We lost but we did well and tried our best.

We headed back to school. We were all so proud of ourselves for qualifying to go to Canterburys!! By Jordan, Olivia and Erin
