What's Wrong with the Way NZ Teaches Maths?

Stuart Cameron —

On 16 April, Q+A aired an article exploring what the latest research suggests is the best approach for teaching mathematics. This is something that has been very topical in schools across the country over the last couple of years.

"What's Wrong with the Way NZ Teaches Maths?" is an 8-minute long interview with Professor Jo Boaler who is a leading researcher in the area of mathematics based at Stanford University.  During the interview, Professor Boaler explains what the current research says about effective maths teaching, with particular reference to the latest findings in neuroscience. The video can be viewed here

To help us continue to improve the way mathematics is taught at Halswell School,  we have partnered with Canterbury University: Education Plus to deliver a comprehensive professional development (PD) programme to our staff.  This is the major PD focus for this year.

To help share some of this research and practical insights with our community, you are invited to attend a parent information evening from 6-7pm on Tuesday 4 June. The presentation will take place in the Stadium  (school hall).  Sarah Cobb from UCEd Plus will be facilitating the meeting. She will be sharing with you the latest research on what makes for the most effective maths teaching with a particular emphasis on rich maths activities and problem-solving.

Please note that this presentation will be followed by a "Meet the Candidate' evening for any prospective Board of Trustees candidates.

More information about these events will be shared with you in the coming weeks.
