Ōtūmatua Weeding Warriors

Lisa Dovey —

With the support of the Park Ranger and Mitre 10 Mega Hornby, Ōtūmatua have started their campaign at the Quarry!

On Wednesday 26 February, as part of our Tūrangawaewae and Kaitiakitanga focus, the whole of the Ōtūmatua team made their way to the Quarry to begin our partnership with the Park Ranger, Nigel, to assist in taking care of the Quarry area.

Our first task at the Quarry, was weeding.  We were working near the main entry ponds, and managed to clear the weeds around a large number of the newly planted trees and bushes.

Whilst at the Quarry we also had our first experience with the Orienteering tracks down there. We started with the easiest track and will build up as the children become more competent.

We are very grateful to have the support of Mitre 10 Mega in Hornby, who have supplied the gardening gloves for all of the children!  We are hoping to keep up this relationship with Mitre 10 during the year!
